Risk Management at Nazarbayev University
Nazarbayev University is committed to embedding a proactive and robust risk management culture. Aligned with the principles and guidelines of ISO 31000:2018, our framework ensures the creation and protection of value across all functions, structural divisions, research centers, and organizations.
The University’s Integrated Risk Management Framework establishes the formal foundation for managing risks at NU. It outlines our customized, inclusive, and dynamic approach to Risk Management, covering core principles, the iterative Risk Management Process, and the Three Lines of Defence model to ensure clear roles and accountabilities.

Our framework is structured around a central, strategic process, supported continuously by vital communication and monitoring channels.
The Core Process: A Strategic Approach to Uncertainty
At the heart of the framework lies a structured, sequential path designed to turn uncertainty into informed decision-making.
The Pillars of Continuous Engagement
Crucially, our core process does not operate in a vacuum. It is supported by continuous activities that flank every stage of the cycle:
-
Communication & Consultation: We recognize that effective risk management is inherently collaborative. By continuously engaging with stakeholders, faculty, and staff across the University, we ensure diverse perspectives are captured, silos are broken down, and there is a shared understanding of risk at all levels.
-
Monitoring & Review: The higher education landscape is constantly evolving. Ongoing monitoring guarantees that our risk assessments remain accurate over time, that our treatment plans are actually working, and that we can swiftly adapt to new, emerging risks.
Ultimately, Nazarbayev University’s Integrated Risk Management Framework is designed to build resilience. Through this continuous, well-communicated, and heavily monitored cycle, we protect our institutional integrity and ensure the sustained success of our community.
This website provides open access to Nazarbayev University’s selected internal policies and regulations. Please note that the detailed procedures and templates are available to relevant NU stakeholders only.
The University’s Risk Register provides a documented record of identified strategic, operational, financial, and academic risks. It details key risk indicators, impact/likelihood scores, risk owners, and control measures to monitor and mitigate risks across NU's core mandates.
