Before appointment to his current position in January 2016 as the Chair of the Department of Medicine at Nazarbayev University School of Medicine, Dr. Vento was Professor of Medicine & Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Botswana in Gaborone from June 2014 to November 2015. Previous to this he was Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Botswana from May 2013 to May 2014 and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the same University from January 2009 to April 2013.
Dr. Vento joined the University of Botswana following an academic career at the University of Verona where he was associate professor of infectious diseases. He earned with honors his MD and his specialization in infectious diseases from the University of Bologna, Italy.
His research has focused on viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis and HIV infection. He has over 190 publications including in The Lancet; The New England Journal of Medicine; Gastroenterology; Hepatology; Clinical Infectious Diseases; Autoimmunity Reviews; AIDS.
